This course will invite experts from different field, including but not limited to electrical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, energy engineering, biomedical, nuclear engineering, to give seminar talks and experience sharing with enrolled graduate students on a weekly basis.
3. Contact TAs for questions: 1. Grading Guide: There are 12 colloquium talks this semester. You need to submit 12 qualified reports to get a basic final grade of A. 【 Bonus points 】can be acquired through your on-site questions or critical comments to the speaker → asking one question to the speaker deserves one bonus grad point and can be accumulated up to A+. 【The submission of report form】 Requirement: Each report needs to contain more than 100 words and be closely related to the talk. A short or sketchy (<100 words) report or the content in the reports is irrelevant to the talk, is regarded as a disqualified one, and will result in a deduction in the final grade by one grade point. The student should also resubmit a qualified report after receiving the notice from the TA before the deadline; otherwise, the report is considered as a missed one that causes a loss of five grade points at the end of the semester. On-time submission: After the talk, the associated report form should be uploaded to the eeclass platform (PDF file only) before noon (12 pm) of the next day (Thursday). Any report submitted after the deadline is considered as a late report. Late report submission: (1) Time for late submission: Starts from 12 pm of the next day after the talk to the noon (12 pm) of next Thursday. e.g., for a talk on 10/5 (Wed), the report submitted before the noon (12 pm) on 10/13 (next Thursday) is considered as a late report. (2) Deduction of grades: Late submission of the report causes a deduction in the final grade by one grade point and so on. Therefore, (assuming you are in the case of submitting 12 qualified reports and got the basic final grade of A), five late report submissions can result in a final grade below B- without helps from the bonus points. Please be aware to submit on time. e. g., 12 reports → A – 4 late reports → B- + 5 questions → A+ Missed report: (1) Report after the period of time defined for late submission will not be accepted, e. g., for a talk on 10/5 (Wed), a missed report is defined as the absence of report after the noon (12 pm) on 10/18 (next Thursday) (2) Deduction of grades: a missing report causes the deduction by five grade points in the final grade and so on. Therefore, one missed report can result in a final grade below B- without helps from the bonus points. 【Fail condition】 Each person can only submit one report at a time, and you cannot help other students to submit their reports. If we found out there are cases of plagiarism, the semester scores of both parties would be zero, and they will be sent to the school affairs office to deal with the act of cheating in the exam, and there is no remedy. 2. Leave Rules: Every colloquium talk will be recorded and will be available on eeclass when requested. Students who cannot attend the colloquium can submit their leave form, then watch the video on eeclass, and submit the report form (PDF file only) to eeclass before noon (12 pm) of next Thursday after the talk. e.g., for a talk on 10/5 (Wed), the report with a leave request should be submitted before the noon (12 pm) on 10/18; otherwise, a missed report causes the deduction by five grade points in the final grade and so on. The leave form can be downloaded from the eeclass platform. Please fill in the info and get it signed by your advisor before you email it to the TA. There are two types of leave forms: (1) For single use: Leave Form Applicable to personal leave, sick leave, etc. Each leave application form should be handed to TA before noon (12 pm) of next day after the talk, or else the report will be considered as a late submission. A maximum of three leave applications are allowed for one semester. If your applications exceeded the allowed chances without appropriate reason, each exceeded leave application will result in a deduction in the final grade by one grade point. (2) For long term use: Leave Form Applicable to students who can’t attend the colloquium more than three times. E.g. on-job students, students who are doing research outside the university for a long-term period, students who cannot enter the country due to the pandemic, etc. Students staying at NTHU cannot apply. This application form must be submitted within two weeks after the start of the semester. Late application will not be accepted. 3. Contact TAs for questions If you have any other questions, please contact the TAs. (Please refer to your enrolled department for the corresponding TAs.) 4. If there is any disagreement between this syllabus and the class announcements, pleases refer to the rules announced in the class first week of the semester. 5. Rules about generative AI: forbidden Generative AI cannot be used in this course. The report form should be written by the students without the aid of outside sources. According to the rules announced by NTHU, generative AI is forbidden in this course and is subjected to the following rules: Students enrolled in the course cannot use generative AI to write the report form. If any violation is identified, the report form will be rejected. Students who enrolled in this course automatically agree these rules.
